Weekly summary #5

Summary of the fifth week’s of my #SeniorDevRevamp project. AWS on fire!

Overall summary

AWS Dev Associate certification exam hit me hard last week. The course on UDEMY is over 30 hours long, and that shows. In the second part of the week I had to pause the course for a couple of days. The amount of flashcards I was producing was huge, and I just wasn’t able to keep up with them. The strategy, that assumed first repetition of the material two-three days after it was studied for the first time does not work. In order to increase the benefits of spaced repetition, first re-learning should happen next day. In my case there was just too many remaining flashcards from previous before. Fortunately, I was able to catch up with the material already. However – for the upcoming days I will try to keep the total amount of new material in check. I have settled with 70 new flashcards per day limit.

Besides AWS I have finished re-reading Martin Kleppmann book. As a result I’ve published kind-of review of it, and the flashcards are publicly available. My plan now is to continue exploring current state-of-IT world with “Mastering API architecture” book (with ANKI flashcards being made), accompanied with leisure-read of “Systems Design Interview” part one.

Day by day list

• 08-07-2024: Yeah, I love the smell of ANKI in the morning 😉 Also AWS certification course, and Kleppmann’s book next chapter on partitioning.
• 09-07-2024: The amount of flashcards in the AWS section seems to grow behind imagination now. I’ve increased the number of new ones to learn every day in order to speed things up. 2 course chapters, and another Kleppmann chapter (big one – about transactions).
• 10-07-2024: ANKI as usual. Next 2 chapters of AWS course was pretty robust and full of knowledge. Fortunately, to balance that, Kleppmann’s book chapter that I had planned was quite simple, and I’ve just read it for fun.
• 11-07-2024: ANKI as usual, almost over one hour of them. Hardcore AWS lambda chapter in the UDEMY course (over 3 hours!). Finished with two chapters from the Kleppmann book. I must confess – that was a challenging day.
• 12-07-2024: I hit ANKI hard today. I realised that I produce too many of them with following the UDEMY AWS course day by day. Therefore, it takes some time for the new material to appear in the deck. The decision for today was to skip AWS course completly, to allow myself to catch up a little. With my free time I have finished Kleppmann book, and written kind-of review of it.
• 13-07-2024: I have spend a lot of energy and time on ANKI repetitions. As this was busy day for me outside of learning, I did nothing more.
• 14-07-2024: Flashcards all over again. To catch up with the material I spend some quality time with all the RSS feeds and newsletters I subscribe to. Also, started reading “Mastering API Architecture” book, in order to replace finished Kleppmann book. In order to get some more at-hands thing to concentrate on, I have also refreshed my Big O notation knowledge, and I have written short article about it.
